Madrid's Air Tree

Just found an interesting article. I wonder how this structure faired out...

Huge “Air Tree” Structure Produces Its Own Power and Oxygen

by JUSTIN THOMAS on JANUARY 16, 2008
In Madrid, Spain they are currently building a huge structure called an “Air Tree” or “Eco Boulevard de Vallecas”. The Tree was created by Urban Ecosystem to be a social center, and to improve the surrounding environment. The structure is also completely self-sufficient, generating all its own power with solar cells. Any surplus energy is sold to the electrical grid. It also produces oxygen using its arrays of plants and trees, hence the “tree” appellation. The designers say:
…Simple air conditioning systems installed in the air tree are evapotranspirators. This is a natural way to air condition a space, not a part of commercial strategy. Rather, it creates naturally conditioned spaces between 8-10°C cooler than the surrounding streets where the residents can take active part in the public domain.

Park Near Express Bus Terminal

CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON

This shot was taken at a school zone near the Express Bus Terminal in Seoul; my usual route during my trips to Seoul. I decided to go for a stroll beyond the terminal while waiting for my bus to Jochiwon. I had about an hour to spare for some sightseeing and photo walk.

Korea University Sejong Campus Open House Party

Korea University Sejong Campus is known as the "Best Boarding Campus". Indeed it is. The dormitories have great facilities and a home to a lot of students away from their hometowns. The open house party started last night and is celebrated annually for two consecutive nights with temporary hofs (tents were put up around the place for drinking) and a stage facing the Truth Building for the entertainment and all-night singing and dancing. Just tonight, before finally hitting my pillows, I decided to get my camera and take some photos of the people partying with the KU Cheerleaders on the stage dancing and singing. The funniest part was the red plastic bags that were inflated and used as props! I haven't seen any crowd gone crazy and raised up plastic bags whirled above their heads. Students were very energetic and I took the opportunity to capture the moment. *wink*

Just as I was about to head back to the dorm, a song to the tune of Canon in D (my favorite instrumental ever) was played! I couldn't resist and took a video of the happenings until the song ended. =)

SEA Adventure (outside trip)

Although I'm not part of the trip physically, reading this letter makes me feel like I'm with every adventure my family has been to!:)

"Hi everyone! Bonjour la famille! (desole, this is in english)

It's a rainy morning and it doesn't look good for us, the tourists
here in Hue, vietnam.  Hue is in the central part of the country,
between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in the south.

We've been travelling by plane, train, boat, taxi - almost all sorts
of transpo the country has to offer. And aside from the hotels, we've
tried sleeping in a boat on Halong Bay and the sleeper section of the
train from Hanoi to Hue.

We've been very lucky so far with the weather and with our health.
Mama decided to take a break yesterday morning as she was not feeling
well and Andre in the afternoon who begged off from the river boat
cruise because of a headache.
Food is wonderful and varied! Last night, after our river cruise, we
decided to go to Carambole that served french - vietnamese cuisine.
So, we had a table of baguette, steak, pasta, rice, salads, fries, and
traditional Hue food wrapped in banana leaves, the namh and loc.
Yummy!

The best thing was we found a laundry place that did laundry by the
kilo not by piece that was too expensive for us at the hotel.  Of
course, Dom succeeded in getting a bargain for the 16-kilo laundry
bring the price down from US$1.50/kilo to US$1.00/kilo.

Hue people are very entrepreneurial.  We went to Lac Thanh Resto - a
restaurant run by a deaf and mute family.  Luckily, the 3rd generation
children are normal and one of them, Loan, dealt with us in english
and french!  big surprise for us as most vietnamese we met spoke
english. We found out that the resto next door as well as the clothes
shop were owned by Loan's aunts.

With 12 of us travelling, it is obvious that we occupy at least 2 big
taxis or one 16-seater van. A similar thing happened on our cruise on
Halong Bay: the boat had a capacity of 18 so we had more than half of
the rooms and 6 tourists from UK and New Zealand join us.

Also, it's not yet the tourist season so it seems like we are the only
guests in this riverside hotel.  It's quite weird to go on an empty
reception area in the morning with the lights out and the receptionist
sleeping on the floor with a mosquito net around him. ;-)

ok, gotta go to breakfast now. a la prochaine,

Bing
xoxo"

20 Life-Saving Pieces of Produce

Reposting GREAT TIPS from READER'S DIGEST Newsletter:

20 Life-Saving Pieces of Produce

Unless you’ve purposely ignored reading anything about nutrition for the past 30 years, you know that message Number One is that eating lots fresh produce—including both fruits and vegetables—can substantially lower your risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and many other diseases. And if you have a chronic  health issue like high blood pressure or diabetes, regular consumption of green, red, blue, orange, and purple produce can help you reverse the condition.
We encourage you to eat as many fruits and vegetables as you want—provided they’re as close to their natural state as possible. That means fresh fruit and minimally cooked vegetables. It also means limiting canned produce (which is often packed minus the skin, an important source of fiber) and opting for either fresh or frozen to get the most fiber and nutrients.
The best way to approach produce is to eat as many different kinds as often as possible. Don’t think of that as a chore. Many people tend to reach for the same produce, shopping trip after shopping trip, and then complain that fruits and vegetables are boring or unsatisfying. Cut out the monomania. Diversify your shopping cart. It just might save your life!
Below are the top twenty pieces of produce that pack the most antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent and slow down oxidative damage to our body—a chemical reaction you want to avoid as much as possible. Why? When our body cells use oxygen, they produce free radicals that can cause damage to our internal organs. Antioxidants act as free-radical scavengers and snuff them out, preventing and repairing damage done by these evil-little free radicals. Health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, macular degeneration, and cancer are all linked to the oxidation process and free radicals.
Try a different piece of produce each week. We promise you’ll never get bored and you’ll be getting a ton of nutrients that stabilize your blood sugar and fight off a host of long term diseases. Here are our top twenty, life-saving, fruit and vegetable picks.

Fruit
1. Prunes
2. Raisins
3. Berries
4. Plums
5. Apples
6. Oranges
7. Red grapes
8. Cherries
9. Kiwi fruit
10. Grapefruit

Vegetables
1. Kale
2. Spinach
3. Brussels sprouts
4. Alfalfa sprouts
5. Broccoli
6. Beets
7. Red bell peppers
8. Onions
9. Corn
10. Eggplant

Diabetes Recipes

Bisques are often prepared with pureed seafood and heavy cream. In this healthy version, a flavorful seafood stock is prepared with a fat-free base. Fennel, shallots, and chopped red bell pepper add flavor, texture, and vitamins.

Serves 6

Ingredients:

1 pound raw shrimp, heads removed
4 tablespoons dry white wine
4 slices lemon
4 black peppercorns, lightly crushed
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped or 2 teaspoons dried parsley
Cooking spray
1 fennel bulb, finely sliced (reserve the leaves)
1 shallot, finely chopped
1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
Pinch paprika
1 red bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
Salt and pepper
Chopped fennel leaves for garnish

Preparation:

1    Peel the shrimp and set them aside. Place the shells in a large saucepan. Add 6 cups cold water, wine, lemon slices, peppercorns, and parsley to the pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Skim off any scum that rises to the surface during cooking.
2    Meanwhile, under running water, use a small, sharp knife to make a shallow slit along the curved back of each shrimp. With the tip of the knife, remove the black vein and discard it. Cover and chill the shrimp until needed.
3    Allow the shrimp-shell broth to cool slightly and then strain through a fine sieve into a large bowl.
4    Heat the same saucepan coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Add the fennel and the shallot and cook, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are soft but not brown, about 8 minutes. Stir in the breadcrumbs, paprika, and stock. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer. Add the shrimp and continue simmering for 3 minutes.
5    Use a slotted spoon to remove 6 shrimp for garnishing the soup. Set them aside. Lightly season the soup with salt and pepper and simmer for 15 minutes.
6    Puree the soup in a blender or food processor until smooth. Return it to the pan and add the red bell pepper. Reheat the soup until piping hot. Serve garnished with the reserved shrimp and chopped fennel leaves.

Tip of the Week

Try This Healthy-Portion Trick
Having a hard time managing your portion sizes at meals? Take a photo of your loaded-up plate before eating. Thanks to smart phones, most of us have a pretty decent quality camera at our disposal at all times. Use it to help keep your diabetes in check. Snapping a pic before digging into your meal can help you become more conscious of portion sizes. You can even refer to the photo later when you want to write down what you ate and how much. And if looking at the photo makes you change your mind about indulging, good for you! Then use the erase button to remove the photo—not to mention the extra calories.

Seoul Friendship and Lotus Lantern Festival

07 May 2011

Class ended at exactly 4:30 PM and I've got to go right away because Micah and Krish are already at the City Hall!

1630h I rushed to the subway and met Tin at Dongdaemun station at around 5 PM. We reached the city hall at 5:25 PM. Krish gave us a call to inform us that they're waiting at Dunkin Donuts straight out of the subway exit having some snacks.

The Seoul Friendship Fair

* We started at farthest booth near stage and had photo with some Irish men.
* Wore costumes from different Nationalities
* Photo-ops with booths from different nations. We'd even ask foreigners to pose with us. ^^
* Took macro shots of plants around the place.
* Booth-hopped from one country to another.
* Went to see international children's painting display

At 7:00 pm, we were getting even hungrier so we checked out the food fair. Too bad, it was almost finished and everyone was packing out T___T" We were too eager to try out different dishes only to get tok. T___T"
We ate some patty with tok and sausages and went to the giant "kuhol" where we took photos with the World Vision display.

We met up with Kuya Nads and other FILIPOZENS at Mr.Pizza and we got a treat from Kuya Marzy! ~^^

After dinner, we photo-walked at Jonggak. *Night Photography / Long Exposure Practice*

Cheonggye Square

We went down the bridge to do long exposure shots with Kuya Marzy as the mentor. Thanks to his heavy-duty tripod! ~^^

There were lots of couples around so I also took "couple" shots. LOL

It's past 12 midnight and we were still up and ready for more action. Where to go???

We decided to go for samgyeopsal and shots of soju and mekju! And to Hyehwa we go!

08 May 2011
THE AMBUSH KIDS ATTACK

We met up with Corinna at the pub and had some soju and beer. To make the long story short, by 4:30am,
Corinna: "Kuya Marzy, magbabayad na po"
And Kuya Marzy got ambushed again...LOL

Upon reaching Tin's dorm, I simply went straight to bed knocked down. =))

We were supposed to go to Incheon but we woke up to the 10am alarm at Tin's dorm with Micah sharing the bed with me. I sure had a good sleep, I wonder with Micah...? =))

We went to have lunch at the best budaechige resto and heard mass at 1:30pm (Filipino mass) at Hyehwa church. After mass, we went to visit the FILIPOS booth at the Filipino fair behind the church. Micah shopped for delicacies and squeezed out discounted 2k from Kuya Jay. LOL

The mbush kids again were able to convince Kuya Pudu to buy empanada for us. The ambush kids did it again. LOL

Going back home, Micah and I rode the 1740h trip of the Mugunghwa train.
In the train, we were entertained by three Japanese guys flirtin' with a Korean girl and a bilingual kid as we tried to interpret their conversations since we couldn't sleep. LOL
Micah got off at Cheonan by 1845h and I reached Jochiwon at 1906h. I went to dorm and dozed off. EXHAUSTED BUT HAD EPIC FUN! ~^^

Street Artist in Myeongdong

Curious little girl --- she patiently waits for her balloon being prepared by the tall, thin clown in long red pants with a knapsack. This was taken at Myeongdong where mascots from different brands and stores are out in the middle of the streets and some street artists like this guys would just surprise you. My friend and I were in Faceshop at that time and she was about to buy some goods when suddenly I told her that I'll just go out to chase the tall man for a photo. She then decided to leave her supposedly merchandise and followed me running out to this tall, lanky clown. =))

Life is the coffee

Life is the coffee

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive, and some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

After all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress." "Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it's just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we
drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups & and then began eyeing each other's cups."

"Now consider this: Life is the coffee. The jobs, houses, cars, things, money and position in society are the cups. They are just used to hold and contain life. The type of cup we have does not define nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us." God brews the coffee, not the cups . . . enjoy your coffee. Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've
decided to see beyond the imperfections. Live in peace and peace will live in you.

Budaechigae Bokkeumbap and Buzzer Beating Ride

03 May 2011

It was our first ppt presentation in Hydrosystems Engineering for our individual term project. So far, my report went well. After the class, I decided to have lunch with Lee Min Ho oppa since the other guys had to finish some TA work. Only Min Ho oppa was gearing up for lunch and I was also hungry already! I've always liked 부대찌게 so he brought me to this restaurant that specializes in 부대찌게.

The specialty of the house: Budaechigae 부대찌게 - 볶음밥 Bokkeumbap

Min Ho oppa is majoring in Transportation Engineering and it was good that he tries his best to speak in English even if he finds it hard. He even paid for my lunch! It was a really good lunch!!! ^^,

After lunch, he taught me the way back to the subway station (since I'm very unfamiliar with the area, the campus is really big and I can still get lost in it! LOL).

~Buzzer Beater Again~

By the time I got to the train ticket office, the ticket lady sold me a train ticket to Jochiwon which is 5 minutes prior to departure time (1320h)! I was already thinking of taking the next trip which is about an hour from then but she just smiled back at me when I saw the time and asked "Can I still make it?". She told me the platform number and I ran as fast as I could to make it to the train.

Got in the train within three minutes! Whew! Buzzer beater, almost! I was breathing deeply as I headed straight to the toilet, exhausted with my huge "explorer backpack". LOL.
