Life is the coffee

Life is the coffee

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive, and some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

After all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress." "Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it's just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we
drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups & and then began eyeing each other's cups."

"Now consider this: Life is the coffee. The jobs, houses, cars, things, money and position in society are the cups. They are just used to hold and contain life. The type of cup we have does not define nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us." God brews the coffee, not the cups . . . enjoy your coffee. Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've
decided to see beyond the imperfections. Live in peace and peace will live in you.

Coffee Prince and Dawn Subway Photowalk

CRAZIEST SIDETRIP EVER~~!!!^^,

1130h
I went to eat lunch by myself at the Grazie at the basement of our building after my morning lecture class since MJ oppa was absent. I had bagel with cream cheese and ramyeon for lunch cos I was really hungry! LOL.

While reviewing (cramming LOL) for the exam, which was in an hour an a half that time, a guy approached me and asked if I'm a Filipina. (But of course! LOL). To my surprise, Bernie is also a Pinoy (but he grew up in Canada) and is also a graduate student in Anam campus and his laboratory is just on the 4th floor of the same building where I take my Saturday lectures! Now I've got another Pinoy friend to talk to during my Seoul trips!^^

1330h-1630h
Midterms...*Sabog* ~ disaster? But everybody felt the same about the exam so it's something not to worry too much about. At least I was able to answer whatever I could. LOL.

1830h
I met Tin at Dongdaemun station and we took the subway going to our photowalk itinerary. Originally, our itinerary was Itaewon - Myeongdong - Namsan Tower. But because of the rain, our backup itinerary was ~ COFFEE PRINCE!!! ^^

~COFFEE PRINCE~

1930h
After getting off at Hongik Station, Tin took out the directions and we walked to looked for the place. With the power of our instincts, we found Coffee Prince!!! LOL. The place was so nice, warm, cozy and definitely so inviting that even the hosts offered to take our photos! We stayed in a corner where we can see the colorfully painted wall and took photos of the interior. I had cafe mocha while Tin ordered New York cheesecake. The price ranged from about 7,000 - 12,000 won. Not bad for a nice, cozy place that became famous because of the Korean drama that was entitled after the name of the place, too. Coffee Prince is not only famous in Korea but also in the Philippines! Even before we went in, we also saw some Koreans taking photos of the place. It's either they are nationals or also foreigners who looked like Koreans. LOL.

We stayed at Coffee Prince until it was already closing time! We were the last customers (the closing customers) and we still wanted to take more photos of the interior because we spent the time there talking. LOL. It's such a great place. Might need to go back for a real photo session. *wink* ~~~

~KHAJURAHO~

Since we haven't had our dinner yet, we decided to look around. I spotted a nice Indian-inspired stairway and took some photos. A few minutes later, some guy went down and told us it's ok to take photos. Then we decided to go up and take a look at the restaurant. It's still open! The interior was well-designed - cozy, warm and definitely a good shooting spot! And so there, our clicks went on and on with the permission of the hosts of course. And since we were hungry, we decided to start our "international food trip" as well. LOL. Next time, it's gonna be another country's food we'll be eating. *winks*

We each ordered curry. Mine was lamb and Tin's was chicken. And both were so ---- mmmm! Yummyyyyy! Paired with nans that were so big! The best! Taste, quality, service - all 10 out of 10! Ambiance of the place - also 10! I can even give more than 10! The owner, a real Indian guy, even invited us to have a drink with him but it was already closing time (again!). It was already 12:00 am and we wanted to (try) catch up with the last subway (but we already had a feeling that we've missed it).

~Missing the Subway~
By the time we got to the station, it had just dropped the last passengers. It's closed! So what else is our option? Bus? Nope. Taxi? Too expensive! Jimjilbang? Not in the mood. Photowalk subway-to-subway - ALRIGHT! LOL.

And, since it was both our hidden goals to have each a photo at EVERY subway station (possibly), we thought that it was the perfect time to start! LOL.

So from subway to subway, we would ask passers-by which way to go to get to the next subway station because if we'd ask for how to get to Hyehwa, they'd definitely say take a taxi or tell us it's too far to walk (obviously) and even the thought of walking to the next subway for them is rather not feasible. LOL. But we were up for our crazy adventure! And that's where my flip signature poses started building up files in my camera. It was also a good time to practice long exposure and night shots of cars along street intersections. *wink*

Because of that dawn photowalk, I have discovered the art museum of seoul, just a few blocks from the city hall. By the time we reached the city hall area, there was no one to ask for directions anymore. We saw a taxi and finally grabbed the ride til Hyehwa. At least it wasn't that expensive anymore. LOL. We reached Tin's dorm at around 4 o'clock in the morning and we were scheduled to have a photowalk session with FILIPOS at 10 o'clock that Sunday at Olympic Village. Well, let's see if we'll "not" be late! LOL.

~Directions to Coffee Prince~

1. Take subway Line 2 to Hongik University station. It's marked in green on the map.
2. Go out through Exit 4.
3. Turn right at Seven Springs corner. Walk for around two blocks.
4. When you reac
h the end of the road, turn left.
5. Turn right on the first right turn you see. (Once you turn you will see a Family Mart to your left.)
6. Walk straight for about 500 meters, the street will go uphill midway.
At the end of the road you will find the coffee shop on the right side. Keep your eyes peeled because the shop is surrounded by trees.

Rendezvous at CBTL

"My First CBTL Ice Blended!"

1200h

Only Sok oppa and I were the people in the lab. The rest of the guys were in Seoul having classes. So for lunch, oppa invited me to join him and I'm glad that he's also not a fan of the cafeteria for the professors! I like bibimbap so much and so we went to eat at the place where I had my first bibimbap. I learned that oppa was planning to proceed his post-graduate studies in the U.S. and heard from my professor that he's one of the brightest students even during his undergraduate years. Seems like it cos he was a double major degree holder (Environmental and Civil Engg) during his Bachelor's.^^

At the resturant, oppa ordered spicy ramyeon and bibimbap and I didn't know that it was a treat! Cool! ^^, I was supposed to have lunch with a couple of friends but they had classes still. Because of that, I got treated for lunch! ^^

1320h

I met up with BJ oppa and Keo, who had his head shaved just before we met (LOL), in front of CBTL. They're the new friends I met at the English Cafe. BJ oppa bought coffee for us and since it was a very nice warm day (22 degrees), I decided to have white chocolate dream latte ice blended - my first ever ice blended drink at Coffee Bean here! LOL. We sat outside at the porch area and I was already brave not to put on a jacket or sweater. The warm sun was really such a bliss to my skin! ^^, I loved it!

BJ oppa told us about his interview with Asiana Airlines yesterday and when I found out he applied for FA, I was so amazed and said that that's one of the jobs I'd fancy and I definitely don't see it as a job, it's more of fun than work because it's traveling!!!^^ But it's funny that he doesn't like flying! Both Keo and him have phobias in airplanes! LOL. And so he's expecting not to get accepted, the experience of the interview was enough for him. kkk...

BIBIMBAP PLACE (not exactly the name^^)
2000h

Alone in the lab! Sok oppa already went back to Seoul so I have the lab all to myself and I can sing all I want! LOL. Just kidding! (Half - hahaha!)

I thought I would be having only oranges for dinner. But John came and so I went to dinner with him, Cindy and another friend of Cindy who's living in an apartment just outside the campus grounds. We went to a restaurant that's just a few steps from the apartment and Cindy told me to try the 청둑장. At first I was hesitant cos it was neither beef nor chicken and I didn't want to have pork as much as possible. Then she said something about beans. "Oh, soy beans?!" And I was thinking of tofu already - I'm not such a big fan of tofu. I was hopeful that the way the tofu was being cooked was tasteful even spicy cos I rarely eat plain tofu! When the dish arrived, it was a red soup filled with tofu! @_@ hahah! I didn't know what to say really and so when she asked me how it tasted, I just said "Ok". LOL. It smelled not so good too as what she said. Good thing there were lots of side dishes / appetizers and the seaweed wrap which they call "KIM". I preferred the sidedishes more than the main course we ordered. LOL. It tasted just well and blended with the kim and other appetizers at least, it wasn't that bad and it was just OK. c",)

English Cafe - Rendezvous Not

It was almost 2:00 PM and the people in the lab have not yet eaten lunch! I'm getting so hungry cos I haven't had any meal yet and everyone were just too "busy" to bother about their stomachs calling! T__T" My tummy was already grouching. I decided to pick my reading materials and go to the English Cafe at the building just to the right of our building.

I was looking forward to eating some real lunch - sandwich and some beverage - and I even thought about splurging on lunch for today. When I reached the cafe, I didn't know that everything was for free! Free indeed and there was no food menu to choose from cos whatever there is, that was it - coffee, tea, toasted bread. T___T" Oh  well, at least I saved for lunch and remembered that I still had some bread in my table and thought of eating it when I go back to the laboratory.

A few minutes when I found a place to sit, a couple of guys also sat beside my table. All people staying in the English Cafe really spoke in English. If they were Korean Nationals, some of them were there practicing their English skills through some foreign acquaintances or with their friends who are also knowledgeable in the foreign language. These two guys seemed to have been there for the first time as well. I was buried in my reading materials when suddenly, one of them said "hi" to me. I thought they were referring to someone else near me, but they were actually really saying "hi" to me. (My reaction looked stunned and awkwardly funny). Then that's when I met two new guy friends who are, this time, not from my department! Now I have friends from the Business Management Department and who are very eager to talk with me in English! =))

I guess it pays to be hungry sometime? Haha..Good thing I went to the English Cafe. I simply wanted a place to relax and have some food and I got two new friends to top it all. c",)

Back at the SciTech Building...
11:00 PM
I decided to go home early and bring my materials at home. Hyunjoo called me up and asked me to pass by the laboratory at the 2nd floor. Bean oppa was there with her drinking some Cass beer and just before I headed home, I also took a shot of Cass. kkk...Hyunjoo and I went home together to our dormitory ready to get some deep sleep. c",)

My First TA Session

Cathianne's Journal:

I Start Today My Real TA Work
15 March 2011

Menu for the Day:
Lunch and Dinner were both cafeteria food
*Lunch in Anam Research Center cafeteria (and it was a treat!^^)
*Dinner at Sejong Campus cafeteria for professors (that's where oppas love to eat...)

Good morning! I woke up early and got to the bus station just in time to buy my ticket and something to much on while waiting for the bus.

I arrived early in school and reached the classroom by 8:30am. I was too early that the room was still closed! Haha! So I waited outside til a lady came by to unlock the auditorium just 10 minutes before our schedule. Some of my classmates just arrived too.

0900h
Professor arrives and collects our assignments. I was a bit shocked to see that they'd make cover pages for assignments! I thought it was only done in college, never thought graduate students would bother to do cover pages just for a few page of written report. T___T"

In the class, the subject was getting more complex even though the topic was called SIMPLEX...Oh dear, I wish my brain is working supersonic...

1200h
Lunch at the cafeteria. Jongchun, a new friend of mine whose been trading languages with me through Kakaotalk (I teach him English, he teaches me Hangeul), invited me to join him and the others for lunch. Before our class ended, our professor gave us another manual to read. Good thing, Smartkid's (what I call him cos he's a genius) office had an extra copy of the manual and they gave it to me! ^^ So i need not to worry about where to find one anymore...One less thing to worry indeed but another to read..T___T"

Lunch was treated by Mr. Lee, one of my classmates who is working for a company and is also a PhD student in Anam Campus. ^^

1300h
Walk back to the subway.

1510h
I rode the bus to Sejong Campus.

1700h
I went in the lab and read the chapter of the book for my first tutorial session with the class I am helping MJ oppa as teaching assistant.

1830h
I had an early dinner with MJ oppa, Gwang and Dae-uk oppa. After the dinner at the cafeteria, Dae-uk oppa treated us some coffee at CBTL! Another Coffee Bean for me! My second here! Haha! I miss Coffee Bean and thanks to Dae-uk! c",)

Dae-uk only comes to Sejong during Tuesdays because he is a TA for one of his professor's undergraduate class.

2000h
I went up to the 5th floor with MJ oppa and he introduced me to some students who were there for the tutorial. There was about 10~12 students from Prof.JY's class. I was too conscious about it so I kept asking oppa to let me tutor without his presence, LOL...I didn't realize I was already taking too long! I ended the session a few minutes past 10 o'clock! Whoow...!

When I returned to the lab, Gwang asked for some help in his English assignment. It was about is vacation in Jeju Island and he needed to have his grammar corrected. Then GJ oppa saw it and showed me some more about Jeju and other beaches in Korea. Then he told me about Daechon beach and I learned that during summer, they have this mud festival held for a week long! Cool! I wanna go there too!!! ^^

To explore more of Korea also comes with the hope that this winter break, the professors will bring us, graduate students in the lab, to Jeju Island too! ^^

The End of February

February is about to end. Spring is approaching. Birds have started to come by. There is hardly any snow on the sidewalks and the snows have melted into drizzles and tiny raindrops.

Cathianne wakes up to the sound of her 8:00AM alarm. She realizes she has a roommate, and this roommate, she still has to meet. She gets up and makes her bed. As her roommate comes out of the bathroom, she introduces herself. She feels a warm welcome from a seemingly shy but nice new roommate. Or rather, it’s the other way around. She’s the new roommate of her roommate.

Penny is the name of her roommate and seems to be eager to make friends with her. Unfortunately, Penny hardly speaks or understands English. This is a great challenge for Cathianne. Now she really needs to hasten her Hangeul lessons in order to communicate well with her new friend. So hanging in there, Cathianne hopes soon that they will be able to talk more.

As Cathianne finished her morning routine, she heads down to the laboratory and upon her entry, no one was there. A few minutes after, she heard someone enter but she was busy learning Hangeul on the internet with her earphones on. Gil oppa greeted her as he passed behind her seat. Everything seemed to look busy for Gil oppa as he started typing on his keyboard. In a short while, some of the labmates have arrived while she was busy burying her ears in the lessons she’s becoming more eager in learning. Too busy to mind the noise, she got shocked when suddenly MJ oppa’s head popped on her side to say hello to her. *laughs*

Cathianne has been learning how to speak several phrases and has been practicing how to write the characters and even typing them in the computer. She’s been enjoying these new findings. It was approaching lunch but no one seems to be hungry. Her stomach is starting to grumble but she decides to leave it alone as for sure, one of the labmates would call her to join them for lunch. While keeping herself busy learning, she was once again surprised by another oppa, Kimp, who suddenly greeted her just behind her head to see how she’s been doing. At that she responded with a chuckle and showed him the lessons she’s been trying to learn online. He’s making brewed coffee again. She remembers that he was also the one who made brewed coffee and the first person she saw using the coffee brewer. He must probably the only person not lazy enough to use the coffee brewer. Hah.

MJ oppa finally asked Cathianne if she was hungry and without a doubt, she said yes. So they went to eat lunch together at the cafeteria behind Coffee Bean where they had their first lunch when she first arrived in Korea. At that, she finally remembered how to use the vendo machine in order to get the food stub. For 3,000KRW, they each had rice, several sidings, the never ending kimchi and a bowl of “bin” (if that’s how it is correctly pronounced) to warm the belly. This time, she almost finished everything. Lunch is definitely the perfect time for her to fill up her stomach. Last night’s dinner was too good but she simply has a small appetite for any evening meal though.

Back at the lab, she pursued her lessons online. At almost 5:00PM, Prof. JY called her to his office in order to discuss her tasks for the semester. After having confirmed all that has to be done, she’s finally been given a project to start reading on. Hoping she does well, she listens to the professor intently and prays that God will help her in understanding the project particularly the derivation of all the equations that were shown to her. It’s been a long while since she last had encounters with the “curves” and “snake-like writings” on equations and she admits to herself she’s not a big fan of integration. But this time, she has to be braver in facing these “cobras” as this will be her foundation in building up her future researches and eventually, her thesis.

It was already 7:00PM and Prof. JY dismisses her. She returns to the lab and reads on it. She decides to also finish whatever document submission she can and set the schedules of her submission. MJ oppa then asked if she was busy and invited her to join them for dinner. So up she got and went with MJ oppa, Kiko oppa, and John, the youngest one who was always bullied by being dared to speak to her in English. It was drizzling outside so Juan they had to get them umbrellas for protection. To the familiar road they walked to where the restaurants were. This time, they brought her to the place that served kimchi fried rice. The restaurant was on a cozy place where one has to go up along the small, almost slippery, cemented stairway that led them to what seemed to be a house-turned-into-kitchen with a huge living area. A TV was open and it showed an American movie that starred familiar faces for Cathianne. She’d be glad to watch but was too hungry to be bothered. The food didn’t take long to arrive and whoa! There goes another huge serving of fried rice. She took her android out and took a picture of her food and Kiko oppa teased Juan by taking his own food for Cathianne to take a snapshot of. The three had each a bowl of kimchi fried rice with tuna and egg while Cathianne had almost the same but with a bit lesser servings and without the tuna. The dishes again came with several sidings like the kimchi, the yellow round sweet radish (that up to now, she’s still not one hundred percent sure if that really was radish even if she has eaten it several times), more sidings she can’t name, and a bowl of spicy noodles with sticky something that tasted like the familiar rice-made sticky meals eaten for breakfast or meryenda in the Philippines. Before they left, she paid 4,000KRW for the hearty, overly-full meal that she still can’t fathom as to how she can ever  finish one for the future dinners she’ll be having with them.

Back to the lab they walked as she tried to practice Hangeul in vain. *laughs* They still can’t get what she was trying to say when all she wanted was to practice saying “this is ---“.

After more readings in the lab, Cathianne finally ends her day by going back to her dormitory by 10:00PM. Looking forward to the National Holidays and she hopes to buy herself a good dictionary and the things she need to help her better work things out in her dorm room.
